Yves Mersch, a member of the executive board at the ECB, presented the new series of Europa notes at the bank's headquarters, efe reported.

The Europa bills have security features, such as intricate lettering and holograms, which aim to tackle forgery and impede criminal activity.

The bank released the new bills between 2013-2017, starting with the lower denomination notes first. Following the ECB decision to remove the 500 euro bill from circulation by the end of the year, the new 100 and 200 euro bills will be the last to be presented as part of the Europa series.

The series depicts an image of Europa, a Greek mythological character who lent her name to the continent. The notes are to be shown to the public for the first time at the ECB headquarters in Frankfurt later that day.

The new notes are intended to be more difficult to forge. The ECB has already released improved notes in the denominations of five, 10, 20 and 50 euros.

The 500-euro note is no longer being produced.
