Iran’s Sugar Production Hits New Highs

The Head of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines says the total sugar production of the country in 2016 hit 1.643 million tons, setting a record in the industry.

Gholam-Hossein Shafe’i made the announcement at the “national celebration of sugar production” attended by Minister of Agriculture Mahmoud Hojjati and Chief of Staff of the President, Mohammad Nahavandian.



Shafe’i said the new figure has been unprecedented in the 120-year-long history of the country’s sugar industry, adding that such a record was made with less water consumption and cultivation area.



According to the Iranian official, the crop produced out of each cubic meter of cultivated area of sugar in 2002 was 120 grams, growing to 437 grams in 2011 and 600 in 2016. This, he praised as a significant achievement and advised to serve as a model for other agricultural sectors.



Shafe’i concluded that the success in the sugar industry has led to greater economic profit, production vitality and job creation, which need to be applied to other products as well.
